"Silas Marner" is the shortest of George Eliots Novels, First published in 1861, this novel has long been providing pleasure to the general readers as well as the students with its masterly portrait of moral and psychological behavior in Victorian England. The novel combines humor , symbolism and social criticism to create and affectionate portrait of rural life . It is the story of a young man who almost cut himself off from the world after being wrongly accused of theft and loving the girl he loved. He then became a weaver and began to hoard gold.While the village was celebrating Christmas and New year, two strange events occurred simultaneously :Silas lost his gold and found a child on his hearth. This child grew into a charming young woman and helped him find hope in life.
