Literary Terms

1. Poem:A poem is a piece of writing in which words are chosen for their sound and arranged to produce rhythm.
2. Poetry: Poetry is a collection of poems.
3.Satire: A satire is a literary composition in which public or private abuses , follies or corruptions are held up to reprobation , ridicule or scorn.
4. Wit: Wit is the intellectual brilliance and ingenuity.
5. Lyric: A lyric is a kind of poem in which the poet expresses his desires in subjective style.It is supposed to be sung with the accompaniment of a lyre.
6. Image: An image is a literal and concrete representation of a sensory experience.
7. Irony: Irony is a mode of speech or writing in which the real meaning is exactly the opposite of that which is literally conveyed.
8. Imagery: Imagery is the total of the images or pictures found in a poem.
9. Ode: An ode is a rhymed lyric often in the from of an address , generally dignified or exalted in subject , feeling and style.
10. Ballad: A ballad is a poem narrating a simple tale or story of adventure.It is objective by nature.But in modern time there is a mixture of object and subjective elements.
11. Allegory: An allegory is a story,play or picture in which each character or event is a symbol representing an idea,or a quality.
12. Chorus: The Chorus is a group of performers in a tragedy.The Chorus sings songs at interval and focuses on actions from different angles.Tragedy grew out of the Choral songs.
13. Humour: Humour is the quality of writing by which the writer makes the reader laugh.
14. Action: Action is the story of a drama or play.It is also used for the word plot.
